WATERCOLOUR EXERCISE:
KESSLER'S BARN
KESSLER'S BARN
1. Sketch scene
Washes:
2. Put in a pale red/yellow wash over whole sheet
3. Dry
4. Slightly increase red/yellow wash strength then lay a flat wash down to horizon working around building. (Can put clear water wash before you lay in above wash).
5. Dry
Working Wet in Wet:
6. Next wet paper from horizon up, again avoiding building. Whilst water soaks in mix a darker 3 colour wash. Now take a large brush and lay in the trees. Colour should bleed up into sky.
7. Continue to develop this area by loading brush and letting the tip hit paper where you want emphasis.
Further development:
8. Whilst this area is drying lay in shadows on the house and foreground using red/yellow wash.
9. Further develop shadows on house and foreground (say with a blue/red wash for windows etc) over paler shadowed areas.
Final stage:
10. Now paint quickly and directly. Modify foreground washes and slightly darken house washes
11. Red/blue for brick chimney. Pick out planking. Darkest portions of trees are painted with blue/red. 12. Add foreground texture with mainly red/yellow and a little blue for dark sections.
Stand back and evaluate work.
